The founding of national parks can be traced back to the late 19th century, when a few visionary individuals began advocating for the preservation of America’s natural wonders. John Muir, who founded the Sierra Club, spent decades exploring and studying the wilds of the West. Others, including President Theodore Roosevelt, also recognized the need to protect America’s scenic beauty and wildlife for future generations. In 1872, Congress established Yellowstone National Park, the first national park in the world. Over the next several decades, the idea of national parks caught on, and additional parks were established, including Yosemite, Sequoia, and Grand Canyon. Today, there are 63 national parks in the United States, each a unique and treasured piece of the country’s natural heritage.
Utah is home to five of these national parks. Each has its own unique beauty! Here’s a suggested itinerary for a 7-day road trip visiting all five national parks in Utah in seven days:
Day 1: Start in Salt Lake City, Utah’s capital city, and head south to Moab. On the way, stop at the Timpanogos Cave National Monument for a cave tour. In Moab, check out the city and settle in for the night.
Day 2: Visit Arches National Park, just outside Moab, and explore the stunning rock formations and arches. Don’t miss the Delicate Arch and Landscape Arch, among other popular spots. https://www.nps.gov/arch/index.htm

Day 6: Visit Zion National Park, about 2.5 hours south of Bryce Canyon, where you can hike in the narrows or take a scenic drive through the park. https://www.nps.gov/zion/index.htm
Day 7: On your way back to Salt Lake City, stop at Cedar Breaks National Monument for a stunning overlook of the colorful hoodoo amphitheater. Return to Salt Lake City in the evening.
