It is always a good idea to pre-plan some of the activities that you are going to do while on vacation. First, some activities require reservations. For example, when we travel to Yosemite, we always make horse back riding and river rafting reservations at least one month in advance of our trip. Second, if you are budgeting for your vacation, you will have an idea ahead of time of how much your vacation is going to cost.
There are several places that you can find out about local activities.
- Local Tourism Sites. Search for the name of your city and the word tourism or the phrase visitor information. Many cities have websites dedicated to tourism which include information about the city, attractions, places to stay and eat, maps, tips and a calendar of events.
- Internet Search. You can find all the information you need right on the internet. Type in the name of your city and then the phrase “local attractions” and you will find a myriad of information about attractions and activities.
- Guide Books. If you would rather have a physical book, there are many guidebooks that cover all areas of the world. Fodor’s and Frommer’s are two popular guidebooks and can be purchased at a local bookstore or online. Both Fodor’s and Frommer’s have online sites that also provide information.
- Message Boards or Forums. There are a number of free forums where you can post questions and get answers about the city you are visiting. A few to try are Trip Advisor, Fodor’s and Frommer’s.
Make a list of all the activities that interest you. Keep this list in your vacation binder. If you prepay for an activity, add this to your travel itinerary. It is good to have a list of activities that are both good for good and bad weather days. That way, you can switch plans if the weather does not cooperate.
