Another handy item to keep in your Vacation Binder is ideas to keep the kids entertained. While we travel with various game systems and a DVD player, there are times when the electronics are just not enough. I have compiled a list of various games that I include in my Vacation Binder. Here are a few of my favorites:
Scavenger Road Trip – Make a list of items that you would normally see on the road (bus, flashing red light, railroad tracks, cows, church, etc.). Have them check off the list as they find the items. For younger children, you could draw pictures.
ABC Game – This is my kids favorite travel game. In our family, you can only use the first letter of a word found outside the car on things such as billboards, cars, businesses, etc. Start with the letter A and work your way to Z. Children can not use the same word. We often give leeway for Q, X and Z as these are hard to find.
Fortunately-Unfortunately – This is a fun game that my kids love. One person starts the story with Unfortunately and the next person uses Fortunately. For instance, I would start the story “Unfortunately, we are out of gas” the next person could continue with “Fortunately, there is a gas station just up the road”. The next person could say “Unfortunately, I forgot to wear shoes.” And, so on until the story runs it course, or you tire of it.
Twenty Questions – This is another game that my kids love to play. One person thinks of an animal. The others must ask Yes and No questions only to try and figure out the animal. When my son plays, we always have to ask if the animal is extinct since he loves to choose various dinosaurs as the secret animal!

We love the ABC game! Unfortunately the 18 month old doesn’t get it yet but it keeps the 9 year old busy for hours – LOL!

We play these games all the time in the car. When we go to my mom’s in the summer it is at least an 8 hour drive so keeping the kids entertained in vital.
